Zimbabwean Teachers To Instruct Life Skills To Avoid HIV Infection

August 30, 2007

The United Nations Children’s Fund, or UNICEF, is training 1,500 Zimbabwean teachers in new and practical methods to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.

The week-long training exercise ending Friday stands to benefit more than 500,000 children. The teachers, from training colleges in Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare, Masvingo and Mutoko, will be teaching primary and secondary school children living skills to avoid HIV infection as well as fending off sexual molestation or exploitation.

UNICEF says the decline in Zimbabwe’s HIV prevalence rate in recent years can be  attributed to behavior changes including a later start of sexual activity for young girls in particular, faithfulness in sexual relations, and increased use of condoms.

Tribe take series from cold Tigers

August 26, 2007

Jim Leyland doesn’t want the Detroit Tigers to stare at the standings.

That’s probably a good idea because the slumping Tigers are slipping behind Cleveland in the AL Central and losing ground in the wild card race.

Pinch-hitter Kenny Lofton’s infield single off Joel Zumaya broke a scoreless tie with two outs in the 10th inning, and the Indians went on to beat the Tigers, 3-1, yesterday in Detroit.

Cleveland won the three-game series and leads the Tigers in the division by 2 games, the biggest cushion since it was ahead by three games on July 3.

Down 3-0 in the 10th, the Tigers still had a chance to win a series for the first time since mid-July. Marcus Thames hit an RBI double with two outs off Joe Borowski, putting a pair of runners in scoring position, but Ivan Rodriguez popped up to end the game.

Tigers DH Gary Sheffield (shoulder) missed his second straight game and doesn’t plan on facing one of his former teams, the Yankees, this weekend.

Mariners 9, Rangers 4 - Ichiro Suzuki had a three-run double in between homers by Jose Guillen and Jose Vidro during a seven-run inning that pushed Seattle to a win over the Rangers, who were back home after scoring a record 30 runs in the opener of a doubleheader sweep at Baltimore.

Jeff Weaver (6-10) won his fourth straight start in August.

Seattle is 18-7 since a seven-game losing streak last month and has a two-game lead in the wild-card standings ahead of the New York Yankees, who were off.

Blue Jays 5, Angels 4 - Toronto rookie Jesse Litsch scattered six hits and pitched into the seventh inning to lift Toronto over Los Angeles in Anaheim.

Matt Stairs doubled home a pair of runs and scored another as the Blue Jays came from behind with a three-run fifth inning against Ervin Santana.

The loss trimmed the Angels’ AL West lead to one game over Seattle.

Athletics 12, Devil Rays 2 - Mike Piazza hit his 424th homer, had four hits and drove in a season-high five runs, powering Oakland over Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Piazza hit a two-run shot - his fifth of the year - off Brian Stokes to extend the A’s lead to 10-1 in the sixth.

Twins 5, Orioles 2 - Boof Bonser pitched seven innings of three-hit ball to earn his first win since June 10, and Minnesota took advantage of shoddy fielding by host Baltimore.

One night after permitting a major league-record 39 runs in a doubleheader loss to Texas - including an AL-record 30 in the first game - the Orioles found a different way to lose.

Elsewhere in the AL - Texas Rangers reliever Akinori Otsuka likely won’t pitch again this season even after three doctors who examined his sore right elbow found no structural damage.

General manager Jon Daniels said Otsuka would be shut down for up to three weeks before the right-hander tries to throw again.

A Site For Sore Palates

August 23, 2007

Should a restaurant critic ever step even slightly into the realm of civic boosterism? Technically, no. But as a longtime resident of Hartford, I can’t help but feel a little protective and somewhat encouraging of unsung restaurants in the city, especially those that have the ability to help define New England’s rising star.

Such is the case with the Bushnell Park Cafe at the Pump House Gallery, the seasonal eatery situated in a sublime corner within the city’s handsome patch of green. Occupying the Tudor-style pump house near Pulaski Circle, the cafe has all the physical makings of a very special place for outdoor dining in the heart of Hartford. The walled patio is undeniably charming - beautifully landscaped and ringed by leafy trees that might make you think you’re in a private wooded estate instead of a busy urban center.

When the weather is fine (the outdoor cafe is entirely at the mercy of Mother Nature’s whims), this sweet spot could be a little slice of heaven.

Bushnell Park Cafe at the Pump House Gallery

The hours: Lunch, Monday to Friday, 11:30 a.m. to about 10 p.m.; Saturday, 2 to about 11 p.m. (closing hours can vary, depending on customers). Closed Sunday. Happy hour Monday to Friday, 4 to 7 p.m., featuring drinks specials. Full bar. Restrooms, which are behind the cafe, are handicap accessible. Metered parking is available on Elm Street, but read signs to avoid a ticket (we got one during lunch). The cafe is available for parties and receptions. For more information, see www.bushnellparkcafe.com.

The look: Spectacularly handsome patio is ringed by a wall that imparts a sense of intimacy to this cafe snuggled in Bushnell Park. An open, airy space, the restaurant boasts a natural beauty that on pleasant days can be almost intoxicating.

The vibe: The casual eatery is welcoming and unpretentious. Come in your pinstripes, or come in your cutoffs. There is a laid-back feeling here — perfect for a simple lunch or after-work drinks and noshing.

The eats: The cafe’s chief flaw is its food. The menu itself is approachable, but the kitchen’s execution is shaky. Food is served on plastic plates with plastic utensils.

The bill: Affordable. Appetizers, $5.95 to $8.50; salads, $6.50 to $8.50; panini, wraps and sandwiches, $4.95 to $8.

The verdict: There is a definite allure to the cafe. The food needs work, but manager Marty Pushkarewicz has the right instinct to make this charming space a refuge from the monotonous, workaday world; it’s a special enclave, a place to sit back and enjoy. The seasonal restaurant is a work in progress. With some effort, it could be another attraction for Hartford to boast about.

Emphasis on “could,” for no matter how intoxicating the al fresco moment at Bushnell Park Cafe, the food is a major letdown. There’s no sugarcoating the issue: The kitchen’s efforts, for the most part, are unworthy of its beauteous surroundings.

So let’s get the ugly business out of the way and get back to encouragement (dismissing the cafe solely because of the food would be a huge mistake). The simple bar-food menu of munchies, salads, sandwiches and wraps features things that most people genuinely enjoy eating; it’s the comfort stuff the masses expect from an informal eatery. We’re talking crab cakes, nachos, wings, fried calamari, quesadillas, salads, panini, burgers and dogs.

Nothing wrong with that. But the cafe fumbles on the basics. The crab cakes are pasty; fried coconut shrimp tastes like a mouthful of sweet grease; Wendy’s makes a better Caesar; the Pump House dog wasn’t a red hot (it needed to spend more time on the grill); and the burger was marred by gray meat that tasted nothing like beef. The burger - incongruously topped with grilled roasted red peppers, asparagus and caramelized onions - was so bad, I wondered if the kitchen is actually looking at or tasting the food it is serving. This burger should never have left the kitchen.

The sandwiches we sampled all were served with an innocuous orzo salad. The salad is so boring, I’d rather have a bag of chips. On two visits, the advertised crab and corn bisque was not available. During a lunch visit, only two of eight appetizers could be prepared. A manager came out to apologize for not having some of the menu basics. The apology rang sincere.

Still, I’m bothered. What kind of outdoor cafe does not serve iced tea? “We don’t have iced tea,” our waitress said. “Why not?” we asked. She, rather robotically replied, “I don’t have the answer to that question.”

But questions persist. Why does the bar serve wine in a real glass but makes its beer drinkers and some of its cocktail consumers sip out of plastic? (The owner said space constraints are the reason). Why does the generous mozzarella and tomato salad feature tasteless tomatoes at a time when the fruit is fairly bursting with flavor? How could the kitchen say it’s out of chili but serve chili with the hot dog? Why on two visits is the yummy-sounding bruschetta not available? (Again, the owner says these issues are being worked out.)

We came to the cafe because this summer the former Pump House Cafe featured a new name and a new season for trying to make a go in a place that even a lot of Hartford residents and visitors doesn’t even know exists. It’s tough, I know. But the kitchen isn’t doing the cafe any favors.

That same kitchen, however, is sending out some nice things: a wrap sandwich filled with a chunky mixture of chicken, nuts and apples; a grilled Reuben sandwich that hit the spot; a luscious poached pear salad with Gorgonzola cheese; toasty quesadillas filled with cheese and veggies; nicely prepared fried calamari and a pile of nachos we greedily attacked.

More good stuff: there’s free music Monday through Friday afternoons. And free art: The gallery in the Pump House features work by local artists. When the weather is primo and a jazz trio is playing and a cold glass of white wine is in your hands and a hill of crispy fried calamari is in front of you, the cafe can be transporting. Whether you’re stopping in before a show at the Bushnell, taking a business meeting away from the Trumbull Street hubbub or just catching a few rays in the park, the cafe is a delightful refuge. The food can always be fixed (and, hopefully, for this enterprise’s sake, it will be), but you can’t simply order up the charm that the Bushnell Park Cafe has in good measure. Hartford is lucky to have it.

Cold sores

August 19, 2007

Cold sores are caused by a member of the herpes virus family, called herpes simplex. They occur on the lip, or just above or below it, and are caught through close contact with someone who has a cold sore.

Illnesses, such as colds and flu Menstrual periods Emotional upset, Fatigue, Bright sunlight, Cold winds.

Infection usually occurs in childhood when someone’s kissed by a family member who has a cold sore. The virus passes through the skin, travels up a nerve and hides in the nerve root until it’s activated.

When the virus is activated, it travels back to the skin, causing a tingling sensation. When the sore appears, it’s itchy, painful and embarrassing because it’s so noticeable.

After the first attack, some people never have another one; others get them occasionally, while some get them quite often.

Many things trigger attacks: colds and flu, menstrual periods, emotional upset, fatigue, bright sunlight and cold winds.

Internet Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at reasanoble prices.Internet Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order pharmacy via internet.

Preventing recurrences involves avoiding those things known to trigger cold sores. So, make sure you always wear a lip balm containing UV protection and avoid sources of stress.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet that’s rich in vitamins A, C and E, zinc and iron is also important to keep the immune system strong. Make sure you get enough garlic, too; it has antiviral properties and can be taken fresh or in capsule form.

Some people believe that the herb melissa, or lemon balm, is a good preventative. Make an infusion with some dried melissa leaves in boiling water, leave to cool, strain and store in a bottle. Apply it daily to the lips with cotton wool.

Many people know when a cold sore is on its way because they feel a tell-tale tingle. When this happens, applying a cream containing the drug aciclovir (available from chemists without prescription) may help to lessen the duration and severity of the attack.

Any pain caused by a cold sore can be eased by applying a cold compress of witch hazel to the affected area or by taking paracetamol.

It’s important to always wash your hands after touching the cold sore and avoid putting your fingers near your eyes.

Hess’ Death Set Stage for End of Cold War

August 18, 2007

Friday is the 20th anniversary of the death of Rudolf Hess, the deputy fuhrer to Adolf Hitler. Hess was the last survivor of the Nazi leaders tried at the Nuremberg trials in the aftermath of World War II and remained unrepentant about his role in the rise of the Third Reich.

Hess made a dramatic, 1,500 kilometer solo flight in May 1941 to Britain, parachuting from his airplane. He apparently was hoping to arrange a separate peace with London and save the world from war, but it was a big gamble because he did not officially represent the German government.

When the British government refused to take the bait, Hess’ fate was sealed; in one moment he was transformed from an inspired savior and peacemaker to an insane sinner. Hitler washed his hands of him, and Churchill ordered Hess to be “placed on ice” in waiting for a criminal trial once Nazi Germany was defeated. After Nuremberg, his fate was to serve out a life sentence as Allied Prisoner No. 7 in Spandau Prison in West Berlin.

Why should we remember Hess on the anniversary of his death?

In part because his death marked the final closure of the Nuremberg process and and the removal of sore point in East-West relations. His incarceration had become a cause celebre, sullying for many (particularly in Germany) the good news that glasnost and perestroika seemed to represent: The Allies wanted to free this curmudgeonly nonagenarian, but the more conservative Soviet side argued that a life sentence meant exactly that.

His apparent suicide, using electrical cable to hang himself in the garden shed of the prison, resolved this psychologically significant obstacle to detente. To show how seriously the four allied powers took the threat, after his funeral Spandau Prison was bulldozed flat and a shopping center was built on the site in order to deny any opportunity for neo-Nazis to treat the former jail as a place of pilgrimage.

The cascade of momentous events that followed Hess’ death precipitated the breaching of the Iron Curtain, the fall of the Wall, the end of the Soviet Union and a completely new balance of political forces in Europe and beyond. His suicide by no means triggered this storm of change, but his seemingly endless imprisonment seemed to hold up the beginning of the end of the Cold War.

If there was nothing in his life for which we should commend him, 20 years later we should all be grateful that Hess’ decision to die at his own hands helped set the stage for a new post-Cold War era.

Know your Medicine : Coping with cold

August 2, 2007

The common cold is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract (nose, throat and upper airways) resulting in inflammation of the mucous membranes of those areas. It is self-limiting.

Although it occurs throughout the year, it is more common in rainy days. Smoking, poor nutrition, increased population density, and chronic psychological stress increase susceptibility to the common cold. However, preschool children are most vulnerable.

Symptoms

Symptoms of common cold start one to three days after infection. The first symptoms are discomfort in the nose or throat.

Later, one starts sneezing, has a runny nose and feels mildly ill. Slight fever may develop in some cases. Secretions from nose are watery, clear and plentiful in the first one or two days. Later it becomes thicken, opaque and yellowish green.

Some may even develop cough.

Causes Though several types of viruses are involved causing common cold, rhino viruses are the most common pathogens.

Influenza virus can cause respiratory symptoms similar to those of common cold. Viral contact with nasal mucosa or conjunctiva initiates the infection. The most efficient mode of transmission is hand-to-hand contact with someone who has viral-laden nasal secretions on their hands. Then patients touch their nose or eye with their hand and infect themselves. The spread of virus from inhalation of viral droplets may also occur, but is not very common.

Most colds can be easily identified based on typical symptoms. Bacterial infections and allergies may have similar symptoms. High fever indicates that the infection is not simple cold.

Treatment Though there is no known cure for the common cold, treatment approach is intended to reduce the discomfort of the patients. The treatment option is specific.

Combination cold remedies are very popular, but most of the benefits are doubtful. Combination products are convenient, but the convenience must be weighed against the risk from taking unnecessary drugs.

Pharyngitis (sore throat) is treated with anaesthetic lozenges or systemic painkillers. Nasal congestion is treated with topical or systemic decongestants.

Running nose and sneezing are treated with sedating antihistamines.

If sore throat is the only problem, painkillers such as paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen are likely to be beneficial.

Throat lozenges are too useful especially if local anaesthetic like benzocaine is a component of lozenges. Besides local anesthetics, lozenges often contain local antiseptics (cetylpyridinium chloride and hexyl resorcinol). Local antiseptics are not effective in viral infections. Aspirin should be used with care or better be avoided as it is associated with increased risk of Reye’s syndrome, a potentially dangerous situation.
Discount Pharmacy - Buy Pharmacy at discount prices including free shipping.Discount Pharmacy provides confortable and easy way to order discount pharmacy online. When viruses enter mucous membranes in the nose, blood vessels dilate and cause swelling leading to congestion.

Decongestants constrict these dilated vessels providing some relief. They are available both as oral products as well as nasal products for local use in the nose.

Common oral decongestants are pseudo ephedrine, phenyl propalamine and phenylephrine. The oral decongestants constrict the blood vessels of other parts of the body too, not just that of nose. This causes increase in blood pressure. Hence people with heart disease or blood pressure should not self medicate with oral decongestants. Diabetics and hypothyroidism patients should also consult doctors before using oral decongestants.

Nasal drops or sprays are preferable as they locally act without affecting other sites of the body. But they should not be used beyond three to five days. Continued use may lead to rebound congestion and stuffiness, and further use may lead to drug dependency. Intranasal decongestants include ephedrine, epinephrine, naphazoline, phenylephrine, xylometazoline and oxymetazoline. Some of them are short acting (four to six hours) while some are long acting (around 12 hours).

Specialised formulations even are active for 24 hours. Drops are preferred for children.

Sedating antihistamines decrease sneezing and running nose associated with common cold. Such medicines include chlorphenarmine, diphenhydramine and phenarmine. Non-sedating antihistamines are available in the market, but are costly.

Sedating antihistamines can cause drowsiness and make the people dull.

Driving, operating heavy machineries and other activities requiring alertness should be avoided. Some of the antihistamines cause sensitivity to sunlight. It is preferable to avoid exposure to sunlight or use sun-screening agents.

Guidelines Here are a few guidelines for preventing cold: There is no cure for cold. The treatment is only for symptomatic relief.

Lozenges should be slowly dissolved in the mouth without biting or chewing.

If sore throats are severe or persisting several days, consult a doctor.

Do not self medicate with oral decongestants if one has heart disease or blood pressure.

Persons with diabetes taking oral decongestants should consult their doctor. There may be a need of adjustment of dose of insulin.

Do not use decongestant drops or sprays beyond three to five days with out doctor’s advice. There is possibility of rebound congestion.

Do not touch the tip of the spray or dropper bottle with the hands.

Many antihistamines interact with other drugs. Tell the name of medicines to the doctor or pharmacist.

As antihistamines cause drowsiness, do not drive or handle heavy machineries while using cold medicines containing antihistamines.

Do not use antihistamines without doctor’s advice if one is pregnant or breast-feeding.

Do not use cold medicines in children below two years if especially they have antihistamines.

Do not touch your eyes, mouth or nose with hands. Wash your hands frequently when you are ill or with an ill per son to prevent spreading of virus.

Drinking plenty of fluids, fruit juices and gargling with warm saline water would provide reasonably good relief.

McNabb: “It’s going to be sore

July 29, 2007

Donovan McNabb got through his first practice of training camp this morning and made it clear after he was done that the rehab process from November knee surgery is still ongoing.
“Unfortunately, there are times where there’s going to be soreness,” McNabb said at Lehigh. “When it rains or it’s cold outside, it aches a little bit more. I know I have to be prepared for that and take the time to warm it up a little bit more. … It’s going to be sore, and we’re prepared for that.”
McNabb looked OK at practice, at times moving around gingerly, at times almost tip-toeing around on a field still wet from overnight rains in the Bethlehem area. He worked with a brace on his right knee, a brace he didn’t wear at all during the spring minicamps or at his private workouts with friends and teammates in Arizona.
His passes were inconsistent, although he seemed to get more accurate as practice went on. He said he feels like he’s only at 75 percent of where he’d like to be but has no doubt he’ll be fine by opening day.
“I can do everything I need to do to be successful,” he said. “At 75 percent, I personally feel I can be one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League.”

He said the toughest thing right now is finding the right balance between being aggressive at practice and pushing himself and being careful and patient.
“It’s tough because you want to come in knowing you’re full-speed,” he said. “But with this injury, the steady pounding is what is bad for it.”
Despite all the injuries, McNabb said he doesn’t dwell on the time he’s missed and doesn’t fear another one.
“I don’t live in the past, I live in the present and the future,” he said. “I don’t focus on when I’ve been hurt. The injuries I’ve had, I’ve dealt with them and moved on. Whatever else will not happen. I’m looking forward to having a great year, exciting the crowd and hopefully bring them a trophy.”
McNabb also said he doesn’t look at Kevin Kolb as his successor and said he expects to be quarterbacking the Eagles for many years to come.
“Thirty is still young,” he said. “I’m still dancing with the young kids. I’m preparing to go out so we can win the Super Bowl. I look to play here another six to eight years. If they throw me out of the league, I stayed longer than usual. I want to be remembered as the best to play the position, and I plan on doing it here in Philadelphia. I’ll be here in Philadelphia for years to come

Pharmacists report 60% summer increase in cold remedy sales

July 26, 2007

Miserable weather this summer has sent millions of UK residents fleeing to pharmacies for cold remedies instead of antihistamines or sunblock, a report has shown.

Pharmacists are seeing an unseasonable increase in the number of people requesting medication for arthritis, flu, sore throats and aches and pains, according to Lloydspharmacy.

Cold remedies alone are selling at 60 per cent higher than the normal rate. At the same time, 40 per cent fewer people than expected in the summer are buying allergy treatments.

This June the UK experienced the most rainfall since records began in 1914, according to the Met Office. With many parts of England left flooded after torrential downpours, July is unlikely to fare any better.

People also seem to be fooled by the rain into thinking they are not vulnerable to the sun, meaning UVA sunlotion sales have dropped, but sales of aftersun have increased.

The figures were compiled from UK branches of Lloydspharmacy.
